Gout is a complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone, but men are more likely to get gout. Gout causes sudden and severe pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. Often this occurs in the joint at the base of the big toe. An attack can happen at any time and people describe the pain as their joint(s) being on fire. Gout occurs when there is elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. The uric acid crystalizes and the crystals deposit in the joints, tendons, and surrounding tissues. Women are more susceptible to gout after menopause. When an attack occurs, there is acute inflammation in the joint and other tissues nearby. Without treatment, there can be some joint destruction and even deformity over a period of time.
