By Dr. Elie Klein N.D.
Are you struggling with incomplete urine voiding? Are you annoyed by frequent bathroom trips, especially at night? Imagine if you no longer needed to worry about these issues!
The purpose of this article is to assist in helping to restore your prostate health, therefore reducing the frequency of voiding and improving flow.
The cause of these types of symptoms is enlargement of the prostate gland, which is located below the bladder, between the rectum, the top of the testicles, and the base of the penis. Normally its size is similar to the size of a walnut, but it can grow to be as large as an orange.
Enlargement of the prostate is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Because of the enlargement, the prostate blocks the flow of urine coming from the bladder and through the urethra. This results in feeling constant urges to urinate – even when the bladder isn’t completely full. The inability to completely empty the bladder results in the uncomfortable sensation of repeatedly needing to pee.
BPH affects between 8% to 60 % of the male population, starting shortly after 40 years of age. It’s prevalence increases considerably after 60 years of age. Ninety percent of men over the age of 80 are affected by BPH.
The medications (ie. Flomax) used to treat this condition strive to either relax the bladder or to reduce the amount of a substance called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), based on the belief that DHT causes this enlargement. However, there is research to suggest that it might be quite the opposite. Moreover, reducing DHT can also lead to erectile difficulties.
There are two primary causes of this condition, which occurs more commonly in men over 60.
Excess Estrogen in men:
One of the things that happens in men over 60 is that the amount of estrogen they naturally produce increases. While estrogen has been “marketed” to us as a “female” hormone, it actually occurs in both genders. When males are sick, tired or by the time they reach their 60s, they have as much estrogen as women do. Under certain conditions (disease, poor nutrition, stress, and aging) excess testosterone is converted to estrogen.
It is the nature of estrogen that it causes cells and tissues to enlarge and expand by multiplying excessively, and by retaining water.
Inflammation – mostly from the gut:
Under conditions of chronic stress, the intestines slow down considerably and the cells that line the intestines separate somewhat (resulting in increased intestinal permeability or “leaky gut”). The slowing down of the intestines provides an opportunity for the billions of bacteria that are present in the lower part (the large colon), which is impermeable, to migrate to the upper part (the “small intestines”), which is permeable. Some of those bacteria (which are not supposed to be in the upper part) dislodge certain chemicals they contain, known as endotoxin.
Endotoxin is then able to travel through the permeable intestinal wall into the circulation and interact with various organs, including the prostate, where it causes inflammation and therefore enlargement of the prostate.
It is possible to use nutrition and supplements to safely and successfully treat BPH.
When making nutritional choices, minimize estrogen and endotoxin exposure. Seed oils such as canola, soy, corn and grapeseed should be avoided as they are highly estrogen promoting.
Processed starches and fibers can support the growth of bacteria, and therefore endotoxin, in the upper part of the gut. Therefore, minimize processed foods, like cookies, fried snacks and so on. Instead, eat fresh and ripe fruits and vegetables. Signs of digestive discomfort like bloating and gas are often associated with endotoxin, and in that case its usually better to cook vegetables than to eat them raw.
Helpful supplements
The following are helpful at reducing estrogen and alleviate symptoms of BPH:
A quick acting powerful all in one supplement
Using the above knowledge, I recently formulated an effective natural health product that contains all these natural medicinal substances (and more!) called Dr. Klein’s EZ PeeZ. We are receiving consistently wonderful feedback in terms of how well and quickly it works to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of BPH.
